InfiniBand Updates

Does InfiniBand Have a Future on Hadoop?

Hadoop was created to run on cheap commodity computers connected by slow Ethernet networks. But as data sets grow larger and organizations come under pressure to analyze big data more quickly, which forces them to build bigger and faster clusters equipped with SSDs and multi-core chips, it seems clear that the RDMA approach—either InfiniBand or RoCE–will eventually need to be adopted by any organization running production big data workloads at scale.

EDR Hits Primetime! Newly Published IBTA Integrators’ List Highlights Growth of EDR

The newly published IBTA Integrators’ List from Plugfest 27 showed a significant rise in EDR submissions. Overall, eight companies provided 32 EDR cables for testing, up from three companies and 12 EDR cables at Plugfest 26. The increase in EDR solutions indicates that the technology is beginning to hit its stride.

RoCE Updates

RoCE has Crossed the Chasm

Earlier this month, Kevin Deierling of member company Mellanox wrote a blog post asserting that RoCE has crossed the proverbial “chasm” from technology enthusiasts and early adopters to mainstream buyers. In reference to Geoffrey Moore’s Crossing the Chasm, which investigated the process of high-tech products going mainstream, Deierling states that RoCE has met the three key requirements on its way to widespread industry adoption:

  1. Demonstration that the technology delivers clear business value
  2. Penetration of key beachhead in a mainstream market
  3. Multi-vendor, competitive ecosystem of suppliers

IBTA Publishes Results from First RoCE Plugfest

The Intel Developers Forum (IDF) in San Francisco, CA, is a gathering of technologist, developers and manufacturers that work with and develop solutions based on Intel products and services. This event is a great opportunity to see firsthand what industry experts have planned for tomorrow’s technical innovations.

Last week, IBTA announced the results of the first RoCE Plugfest as well as the availability of the RoCE Interoperability List. Fifteen member companies participated in the event, bringing RoCE adapter, cables and switches for testing. The next RoCE Interoperability event will be held as part of IBTA’s Plugfest 28 in October.
