Mellanox InfiniBand Powers Top European High Performance Computing Centers

NSC Sweden and Meteo France adopted IBTA member, Mellanox’s FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand in an effort to optimize data-intensive application performance and efficiency. NSC is a part of the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC) providing high-performance hardware facilities to research and development activities in academia, defense and weather services. NSC currently has 40,000 plus cores of computing servers in seven individual clusters, each supported by Mellanox InfiniBand solutions. Meteo France specializes in European meteorology and climatology, providing precise climate models and weather forecasts, which focus on severe weather situations that have a significant impact on both safety and the economy. FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand allows Meteo France to run ensemble forecasts – many simulations for one meteorological event – to more accurately determine the location and timing of a specific
weather event.

HP’s Moonshot Scale Leveraged For Transcoding, Web Infrastructure

IBTA member HP launched a new Moonshot server cartridge that comes with a Mellanox dual-port ConnectX-3 network interface. Mellanox ConnectX-3 supports the RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) protocol for efficient, ultra low-latency networking.

The new Moonshot m710 cartridge has one processor and 32 GB of 1.6 GHz DDR3 low-voltage memory. Using Linux and Vantrix transcoding software, the m710 cartridge enabled a rack of Moonshot machines with 450 processors to handle 20 times the number of transcoding streams compared to standard Xeon servers lacking GPU acceleration.
