Cray CS-Storm Packs A Serious GPU Punch
IBTA member Cray has forged a new rack-based variant of its Cluster Solution line, called Storm, that can pack as many as eight Tesla coprocessors from Nvidia into a rack-based server node sporting Xeon E5 processors. The CS-Storm line does not make use of the “Aries” XC interconnect employed by the company’s XC30 high-end massively parallel supercomputers, but is rather using 56Gb/s adapters and switches from IBTA member, Mellanox Technologies, to glue nodes together. This PCI-Express setup will enable faster access to the InfiniBand port. Also, tweaking the Message Passing Interface (MPI) to utilize InfiniBand has enabled the company to run its Cray Compiling Environment on the CS-Storm clusters.

Mellanox Announces Collaborative VDI Solution
Last week at VMworld, IBTA member Mellanox Technologies announced a collaborative solution using VMware Virtual SAN, a hyper-converged storage product, Mellanox’s 10GbE interconnect and Micron’s solid-state drives (SSDs) that enables a highly efficient Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) deployment. The VDI enables a scalable infrastructure that minimizes the cost per virtual desktop user. This helps customers maximize system throughput and cost-efficiency, dramatically improving application performance.
