NASA’s Use of InfiniBand

Researchers at the NASA Advanced Supercomputing Division are using InfiniBand network connections for efficient data transfer to its hyperwall-2. The hyperwall-2 is a 28-ft. by 10-ft. display of 128 LCD monitors that allows researchers to view advanced visualizations in high resolution. InfiniBand’s speed ensures that the hyperwall-2 can move data efficiently without requiring the time-consuming copying of large data files. NASA is using these capabilities to view visualizations of the universe, the flow of energy in our oceans and simulations of new NASA develoments. The hyperwall-2 is helping NASA researchers learn more about our universe with the help of InfiniBand connectivity.

This isn’t the first time NASA has utilized InfiniBand interconnect. In 2008, Obsidian Strategies Inc., the developer of Longbow, connected the NASA Ames Research Center in California with NASA Goddard in Maryland for a NASA evaluation. InfiniBand was also utilized in NASA’s Columbia supercomputer expansion project in 2007, a program to expand InfiniBand’s capabilities across
its facilities.
