InfiniBand At Interop
Taken from the IBTA blog
This month, IBTA member companies attended the Interop Conference 2012 in Las Vegas. As news from the event streamed in and demos began on-site, we couldn’t help but notice that InfiniBand and RDMA were making headlines at the event. Microsoft, FusionIO and Mellanox demoed a setup with Windows Server 2012 Beta and SMB 3.0 that illustrated amazing remote file performance using SMB Direct (SMB over RDMA), resulting in 5.8 Gbytes per second from a single network port. The demo consisted of a combination of Intel Romley motherboards each with two CPUs each with 8 cores, the faster PCIe Gen3 bus, four FusionIO ioDrive 2 drives rated at 1.5 Gbytes/sec each and the latest Mellanox InfiniBand ConnectX-3 network adapters.

ISC’12 begins on June 17th in Hamburg, Germany. This year’s event features two tutorials on InfiniBand, presented by Dr. Dhabaleswar K. Panda and Hari Subramoni. Each tutorial will explore the benefits of InfiniBand adoption in the data center.
Tutorial 3: InfiniBand & High-Speed Ethernet for Dummies
June 17, 2012
9:00 am – 1:00 pm
InfiniBand and High-speed Ethernet technologies are generating a lot of excitement towards building next generation High-End Computing systems including clusters, datacenters, file systems, storage and cloud computing environments. This tutorial will provide an overview of these emerging technologies, their offered features, their current market standing, and their suitability for prime-time HEC. IB and HSE hardware/software solutions and the market trends will be highlighted, and a sample performance numbers highlighting the performance these technologies can achieve in different environments will be presented.
Tutorial 8: Designing High-End Computing Systems with InfiniBand & High-Speed Ethernet
June 17, 2012
2:00 pm – 6:00 pm
As InfiniBand and High-speed Ethernet technologies mature in their support for next generation High-End Computing systems, many scientists, engineers and researchers are becoming interested in learning the details of these technologies. Large-scale deployments of these technologies are also bringing new challenges in terms of performance, scalability, portability, reliability and network congestion issues. This tutorial will provide details about the advanced features (hardware and software) of these emerging technologies and how the above challenges are being addressed, provide an overview of current large-scale deployments of clusters and the associated challenges being faced. Advanced hardware and software features of both IB and HSE and their capabilities to alleviate these bottlenecks will be emphasized. Challenges in designing next generation systems with these advanced features will be focused. Details on the OpenFabrics software stack (including how to program with it), Subnet Management infrastructure and tools will be focused. Case studies and experiences in designing HPC clusters (with MPI-1 and MPI-2), PGAS designs, SDP, GPU computing, and cloud computing systems (including Hadoop, memcached and IB-WAN) will be presented together with the associated performance numbers and comparisons.

Each year, SC showcases not only the best and brightest stars of high performance computing, but also its rising stars and those who have made a lasting impression. SC Awards is one way these people are recognized at SC. It’s not too late to submit for the award opportunities, below.
If you’re interested in submitting your company, or a leader in the SC community, for any of the awards, check out the SC Awards page for more information.
